Western World Is Hypocritical On Polygamy vrs Gay Rights
The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has expressed concerns about the ‘hypocritical’ stance of Western countries who are vehemently opposed to polygamous acts and at the same time promoting LGBTQ+ activities in the name of human rights.
He accused them of pursuing financial interests, rather than cultural beliefs in their stance.
Mr George Nartey who is the lead sponsor of the “Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021” popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, 2021 made the observation on the floor in a contribution to the report of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee of parliament when it presents it report on the Bill to plenary.
The MP questioned the cultural claims put forth by Western nations and stated, “In the West, their culture seeks to prohibit polygamy and support this (LGBTQ+). People think it’s a cultural thing, but it’s actually not a cultural thing for the West; it is a financial decision.”
According to him, the opposition to polygamy by the Western world is based on their tax system rather than cultural values where unmarried individuals are subjected to higher taxes, but once married, their tax burden decreases due to the transition from individual tax liability to household taxation hence the stance.
Meanwhile, all 275 Ghanaian lawmakers are in support of the bill which is expected to be taken through amendments at the consideration stage before passage into law in the coming days.
