“We Cannot Allow This Company To Die” Muntaka On Electrochem
Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase in the Ashanti region, Alhadji Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed has stated that, the dream nurtured by Dr Daniel McCorley through the Electrochem Ghana Salt project must not be allowed to die as a result of the parochial interest of any individual or group of people.

Mr Muntaka who is a member of the parliamentary select Committee on Mines and Energy said this last Friday November 17, 2023 after members of the committee interacted with management and toured the Electrochem Salt mining site as part of their parliamentary investigative duty visit to the facility.

First Deputy Speaker of the House, Joseph Osei-Owusu directed the committee to visit and investigate the leasehold agreement and parliamentary approval granting the company authority to mine salt on the 41,000 acre Songor enclave for a period of 15 years.
The speaker’s directive follows a statement made by Member of Parliament for Sege, Christian Corletey Otuteye calling for a probe into a recent feud between irate youth of Toflokpo, a community along the Songor enclave and security forces guarding workers of Electrochem Ghana limited.
An impressed Muntaka Mohammed noted that the investment made by Group Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr Daniel McCorley through Electrochem if protected will change the fortunes of these communities for the better.

He proposed a win-win approach to help resolve the situation.
“We are all concerned about this dream of McDan’s which should never be killed.”
“Further, this approach should have a middle ground where there would be a win win approach. The Electrochem company has also given a presentation which shows a lot in their work”. The company has done so much for the community and even revived the deserted lands.
He also stated that “Change is not easily embraced not because they are afraid, but because of what they would lose.”
“Electrochem is very strategic and must survive and the community must also survive. The presentation has showed us that the company has created pans and allowed the communities and community members to mine in specific geographical areas which is the best CSR thereof”.
He also said that, “But in all these, we must also find out where the worry is coming and solve it immediately.”

The Asawase lawmaker said it is important for all to protect the Electrochem business nkit to die, “This is a dream led by a Ghanaian and we must never allow it to die, we must all protect it”
