Volta Region House Of Chiefs Appeals For Urgent Support To Flood Victims Of Dam Spillage

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has expressed deep concern over the severe flooding caused by the recent spillage from the Akosombo Dam. 

The floods have had a devastating impact on low-lying areas in the Volta-Basin, resulting in extensive loss and displacement of residents and businesses in the affected regions.

According to reports, Communities in the catchment areas received insufficient notice about the impending spillage, leaving them unprepared for the resulting deluge. This has led to a critical situation with catastrophic consequences.

Among the repercussions, the flooding has disrupted electricity supply to various communities in the affected areas. 

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs in a staement signed by its President, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV is urgently appealing to the Volta River Authority (VRA) and GRIDCO to implement immediate measures to prevent further damage and loss in these communities.

Additionally, the House in a statement called on the Central Government, through the Volta-Regional Coordinating Council, to provide essential support to the affected communities. This includes the provision of logistics and safety equipment through the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to help alleviate the significant hardships faced by the residents.

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs said it  “is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to work towards finding solutions to address the challenges posed by the current flooding crisis”.
