VIDEO: Bawumia criticizes Mahama for ‘unpresidential’ remarks about CSOs, clergy & Imams

September 17, 2024

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) presidential candidate, has criticized former President John Mahama for what he terms as inappropriate remarks.

This comes after a widely circulated video (below) on social media showed Mr. Mahama making strong comments at a campaign event, accusing chiefs, religious leaders, and civil society organizations of hypocrisy for backing the NPP instead of supporting efforts to remove the NDC from power.

Speaking at a rally in Amasaman, Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed surprise at what he called “unpresidential” remarks from the former President. He suggested that Mr. Mahama’s frustration stems from his fear of losing the upcoming election.

“You all know this election is between myself and former President Mahama. But based on the way the campaign is going, he sees that he will lose significantly, and he reacts angrily at the slightest provocation,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He continued, “Today I hear he has insulted pastors, Imams, chiefs, and civil society groups, calling them hypocrites. How can a former President say such things? Is this the way a former leader should speak?”

Dr. Bawumia also referenced Mr. Mahama’s past criticisms of the Electoral Commission and the NPP government, questioning the former President’s choice of words.

He urged for more respectful discourse, stressing that the election should be focused on issues and ideas rather than insults.

“We, as politicians, must maintain a certain level of decency in our language,” he said, adding, “This election is not about insults. It is about ideas. People resort to insults when they have no ideas, but we have ideas and bold solutions to the problems.”
