Post Budget Workshop For MPs Should Be Held In Parliament To Save Cost- Kofi Adams
The Member of Parliament for Buem constituency in the Oti region, Mr Kofi Iddie Adams has proposed for the consideration of leadership of Parliament for the 2024 post Budget workshop for lawmakers to be held within the precincts of Parliament.
According him, the proposal if considered will save the country some Ghc 1.4 million for accommodation just for MPs at a cost of Ghc 1,700 per room.
He indicated that accommodating staff and other auxiliary staff of the house will make cost of hosting the workshop outside very expensive.
Mr Adams made the proposal on the floor of parliament Friday November 10, 2023 following the presentation of the business statement of the house for the week ending 17th November 2023 by deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
He indicated that current economic conditions of the country makes it very imperative for the legislature to lead by example by opting for an in-house post- Budget workshop instead of hosting the event outside.
Addressing the press in parliament house, the Buem lawmaker debunked assertions that, MPs get destructed when such events are held in parliament House saying “we sit in parliament to transact even more important business than just a mere workshop, we are going to debate the budget right here, do we get destructed when we sit everyday to day to do our business?. If we are able to do our business every day, it is possible to have the post budget hearing here without any challenge at all” he stated.
The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to present the 2024 Budget Statement and the Economic Policy of government on November 15, 2023.
