Otto Addo justifies decision to include only one local player in Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers squad

August 30, 2024

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo has clarified that his selection of players for Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers is driven by individual performance and quality rather than the leagues they play in.

Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare is the sole player from the Ghana Premier League included in Addo’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

In explaining his choice, Addo emphasized that his focus is on selecting the best players available, irrespective of their league affiliations.

“It’s a challenging decision,” Addo remarked. “I mentioned previously that we would closely monitor the Ghana Premier League, and I understand that leaving out some players may raise questions.”

“But my priority is not the league—whether it’s the Ghana Premier League, French Ligue 1, the EPL, or the Bundesliga. It’s about having the best players to help us qualify for the World Cup. If I am convinced of a player’s quality, they will be selected,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has been recalled to Ghana’s squad for the upcoming matches, marking his first selection under coach Otto Addo.

Having missed the previous call-up due to injury, the 26-year-old has now regained full fitness, featuring in three games and scoring once for Anderlecht this season.

Ashimeru’s return is also a result of his standout performances during the 2023 AFCON, where he received significant praise for his exceptional play.

The Black Stars are placed in Group F alongside Angola, Niger, and Sudan. Ghana will take on Angola in Kumasi on September 5, 2024, and then travel to Niger for their second group match on September 9, 2024.
