NPP endorses Rejected Cornerstone Amoako Asiamah as Fomena Parliamentary Candidate
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has endorsed the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah as its 2024 Parliamentary candidate for Fomena.
Mr Asiamah in the lead-up to the 2020 general elections was insulted, humiliated and sacked by the NPP but he later became the saviour of the party in parliament when he decided to work with them as an Independent MP.
As a gesture of appreciation or better still, to avoid the 2020 mistake, the party unanimously endorsed him at its National Executive Council meeting.
Announcing the NEC’s decision to the leadership of the Constituency on Thursday September 12, 2024, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi said the party is overwhelmed by the kind of support it has enjoyed from the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, who is currently the independent Member of Parliament for Fomena.
Chairman Wontumi said the party is highly confident that the Fomena seat will return to the NPP with him as its candidate.

He said such a show of love, support and dedication from Asiamah should not go unnoticed, expressing the party’s gratitude to him for saving its image in Parliament.
Having him return to his roots, Chairman Wontumi said was not a business as usual, but a signal of victory for the constituency and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The 2nd Deputy Speaker, in his response, said he has missed everything about the party that was forever dear to his heart.
Asiamah pledged his readiness to lead the party into a historic landslide electoral victory for Dr Bawumia and himself in the Fomena constituency.
He urged all to put behind them, any issue, and work together for the greater good of the party.
To him, what was more important was for the various leaders of the Constituency, particularly Assembly members, to campaign on the many projects currently ongoing in the constituency to garner more votes for the party.
The Regional Chairman’s visit to the Fomena constituency, took him to communities like Adokwai, Dompoase, and Old Edubiase, among others, engaging the constituents on the need to retain the NPP in power, come December 7.
Background
Mr Asiamah who was the incumbent Fomena MP on the ticket of the NPP contested the 2020 parliamentary election as an independent candidate and won following his dismissal from the party.
The Fomena seat was declared vacant by the then Speaker of Parliament, Prof Mike Aaron Oquaye after Mr Asiamah announced his Independent candidature citing unfair electoral processes by the party hierachy in the constituency which led to his defeat in the in 2020 parliamentary primary of the NPP.
He was not dettered by the several attacks on his person for going Independent by the party leadership from the constituency, through the region to national level and even the prediency.
Mr Andrew Asiamah believed in his conviction and his people loved him.
He polled 12,805 votes to win Fomena Parliamentary Election defeating the NPP candidate Mr Philip Ofori-Asante who got 10,798 votes and the NDC candidate Christina Ama Ranson B. who had 2,608 votes whiles another candidate Eric Appiagyei had 158 votes.
He eventually became the cornerstone which which the builders rejected and saved the NPP in Parliament when he decided to do business with the party when it became obvious that no party, both the NPP and NDC had no majority in the the current 8th parliament. All had 137, 137 seats.
The singular act by Mr Asiamah as an Independent MP despite the humiliation suffered, helped the NPP to constitute the majority group in the legislative arm of government.
