NPP Elders To Approve Or Disapprove NAPO As Bawumia’s Running Mate Today
The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, July 4 take a major decision that would impact the fortunes of the party going into the December 7 presidential elections at it seeks to break the eight.
A statement dated July 1 and signed by the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua on the orders of the chairman said NEC and NC will hold separate meetings at at 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively at Alisa Hotel in Accra today.
The main agenda according to eagleghana.com sources will be the affirmation or otherwise of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr Bawumia’s choice for running mate for the 2024 general elections.
The flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia is expected to defend his choice of Energy Minister and why he best fits to be his partner.
Article 12 (b) of the NPP constitution states that the Party’s Presidential Candidate [flag bearer] shall, in consultation with the National Council, nominate the Vice Presidential Candidate [running mate], who shall be a known and active Member of at least five (5) years.
Prior to this day, vice president Bawumia had a crucial meeting with stakeholders including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on June 25 where he disclosed his choice of the Manhyia lawmaker, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
He subsequently informed the national executives of the party, met and informed the party hierachy in the legislature on July 1 of his choice.’
Polls conducted ahead of the selection of running mate puts Dr Opoku Prempeh ahead of other contenders despite the mixed reactions that greeted s his candidature from both within and outside the NPP.
