Minority Demands Apology From Governor Addison For “hooligans” Description
The Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Ghana Parliament is demanding an immediate retraction and apology from Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Yedu Addison for his disparaging remarks against them.
Governor Addison failed to show up last Tuesday October 3, 2023 when the minority led #OccupyBoG protesters converged near the central bank to present their petition to him.
Head of Security of the Bank was rather asked by the Governor to receive their petition.
The protesters however did not present the petition and requested to meet the governor himself.
Responding to the demands of the protesters for his resignation, the Governor dismissed the call of the minority.
Speaking in an interview with an international business website, Central Banking, Dr Addison said he was not stepping down and described the protest by the NDC as “completely unnecessary.”
“The Minority in parliament have many channels to channel their grievances in civilised societies, not through demonstrations in the streets as hooligans,” Addison added in reference to the #OccupyBoGProtest.
This description as ‘hooligans’ however angered the minority who are demanding an aplogy.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a interview on Citi FM, Thursday evening asserted that the minority does not take the Governor’s description of them as hooligans likely and will pursue him further.
“He (Ernest Addison) must retract and apologise. And I can assure you that we take a very serious view of this matter. We condemn the statement he has made.”
“We are not going to take it lightly and on behalf of all the people we represent who are already outraged by those comments, we are going to make sure that this governor is removed from that position”, Mr Ablakwa stated.
