Is MTN Milking Ghanaians?
Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN), a giant in the communication business is motivated by profit just like any ordinary business.
But when the profit of the organisation jumps from normal to abnormal, then there is a need for the Government through the regulator to use a price control mechanism to restrict some of its activities.
Ghana has its fair share of inflation, but from a telecommunication standpoint where most Ghanaians complain massively of the astronomical prices at which they buy data is sad if not horrendous.
Sadly today, some of these telcos especially MTN have reviewed their data prices for the worst and Ghanaians are peeved and frustrated pointing hands at their profits and the unthinkable conditions attached to their 24-hour expiry data.
Other packages include 718mb data service for Ghc10 for one day among others.
According to the 2022 audited financial reports as reported by Joynews / Myjoyonline, the Leading mobile service provider, MTN Ghana, recorded a 42.7% year-on-year growth in profit in 2022 to ¢2.85 billion.
The report indicates that, service revenue of MTN grew by 28.3% to ¢9.9 billion.
This was supported by good subscriber management amidst the national SIM re-registration programme, increased investment in the network and the diligent execution of commercial initiatives in voice, data and Mobile Money services.
Data revenue increased by 39.8% year-on-year to ¢3.9 billion.
This was supported by various commercial interventions which helped drive growth in active data users (+8.3% year-on-year) and consequently increased traffic (+46.6% year-on-year) from its home and mobile subscribers.
Data revenue contribution to total service revenue increased from 36.0% to 39.2% year-on-year.
With this data, I can conclusively say that Ghanaians are being milked and the profits, are repatriated.
