EPA To Establish E-waste Collection & Dismantling Centre At Sege
The Environmental Protection Agency has planned to establish an e-waste management centre at Sege to ensure that e-wastes are properly disposed-off to prevent hazardous emissions from destroying the environment.
Mr Larry Kotoe, the Project Coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency, announced this today August 27th 2024 at a workshop the organization initiated at Sege in collaboration with the World Bank to sensitise the general public on the proper management of e-waste.
Mr. Kotoe indicated that, the motive behind this initiative is to prevent pollution, recover resources and above all create numerous employment avenues for everyone since waste is now being considered the new resource in the world.
According to him, five African countries namely Ghana,Tanzania,Kenya,Zambia and Senegal are currently benefitting from this World Bank sponsored initiative with some countries like Ghana making the headway with centres within the Greater Accra, Eastern and Northern Regions respectively to manage and recycle e-waste accordingly.
He entreated all and sundry to be e-waste management-conscious to help safeguard the environment urging them to set up their own individual e-waste management centers as people who have been licensed by the EPA will come around to buy off their wastes.
Mr Kotoe announced also an e-waste collection app; GH-WASTE APP,which he claimed can be downloaded on google play-store for immediate waste pick up response and to also manage unauthorised entities from abusing the initiative.
He said activities on the ‘app’ will be tracked to ascertain whether EPA is making progress or not.
He, however, cautioned the general public to be mindful of importing sub-standard gadgets into the country and warned that such inferior items will be confiscated if found and to also see to it that they dispose off their wastes properly to avoid pollution.
