Cynthia Morrison Goes Independent But NPP Hopes She Rescind Decision
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West in the Central region, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has officially announced her intention to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.
This decision follows her defeat in the NPP parliamentary primary on April 13, where she secured 152 votes, losing to Christopher Arthur, who received 240 votes.
During a recent interaction with her constituents, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection emphasised her focus on the development of Agona.
“God willing, I would be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”
The lawmaker says her primary objective is her commitment to the development of the Agona West constituency and has accordingly called on residents to support her independent candidacy.
“I don’t care whether you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. But the most important thing is for you to vote massively for Cynthia Morrison so I can come and complete the work I started,” she added.
Morrison first won the Agona West seat in the 2016 general elections and was re-elected in 2020 with 30,513 votes out of a total of 59,193 valid votes cast.
The NPP has however indicated its resolve to engage the MP to rescind her decision in the interest of the party as it aims at ‘breaking the eight’ in the December 7 general elections.
In an interview on citi fm’s Eyewitness news on Thursday, August 22, 2024, NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said the party is focus on unity and is committed to bring all members, including those considering independent runs, back into the party fold.
“As a political party, for this year’s election which has been our mantra, we are going to break the eight. In breaking the eight means we need to do exceptional things and bring everybody on board. Our objective is to make sure that all our party faithful are brought on board.
“So, taking steps that will make sure that at least we engage those who are going independent is something that we are going to do rather than whether to write them a letter or not to write them a letter. What we want to do is to bring everybody on board…the party leadership will continue to engage her.”
