Bawumia Settles On NAPO As His Running Mate
Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has settled on Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as his running mate for the 2024 presidential electons.
Sources at the presidency disclosed that a meeting was held on Tuesday night between Dr Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo where the flagbearer disclosed his choice of NAPO as running mate.
According to the sources, President Akufo-Addo offered some counsel to Dr Bawumia after which he endorsed his preffered partner for the elections.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a 56-year-old dentist and politician who graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
NAPO was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and has since been re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020.
Whiles in parliament NAPO served on the Health, Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament and was appointed as Education Minister in 2017.
The presentation of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s name to president Akufo-Addo baring any 11th hour change brings finality to several months of wait and speculation among members and sympathisers of the NPP and Ghanaians about who the potential candidate will be to partner Dr Bawumia in the general polls on December 7, 2024.
Following the election of Dr Bawumia who hails from northern Ghana as flagbearer, many supporters believe a running mate from the Ashanti region, a strong of the party would be the best bet for the NPP.
Several polls among NPP party executives ahead of this reported submission of name to the president puts Dr Opoku Prempeh ahead of the others as the preferred choice for running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.
