Anti-LGTBQI++ Bill Is Consistent With International Treaties- Akatsi South MP
The Member of Parliament for Akatsi South constituency, Bernard Ahiafor, has stated that passing the Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 which is currently being debated on the floor of Ghana’s parliament is perfectly consistent with all international treaties and conventions adopted by the country.
Speaking in support of a report by the Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee on the biil, Mr Ahiafor who is the Ranking Member on the committee allayed the fears of some members of the public that the bill violates international conventions and treaties that Ghana is a signatory to.
He mentioned international treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civic and Political Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, among others that Ghana signed unto do not violate human rights.
“The bill under reference if passed into law will not violate article 108 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana,” Mr Ahiafor said, stating that if the bill is passed into law there is no provision in any international treaty or convention that will be violated.”
The bill seeks to proscribe LGBTQ+ and related activities, proscribe propaganda of, advocacy for or promotion of LGBT and related activities; provide for the protection of and support for children, and persons who are victims or accused of LGBT and related activities…
