Akandohphobia Grips Korle Bu; Years Of Faulty Elevator Fixed In-less Than 10 hours
The exercise of parliamentary oversight over a statutory body of state has yieded positive result as management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) swiftly fixed a mulfunctioning elevator at the Department of Surgery which has been left undone after several years.
In less than 10 hours after the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Ghana’s Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh paid an unannounced visit to the facility and issued a 24-hour ultimatum, the right thing has been done.
Mr Akandoh in carrying out his parliamentary mandate on Monday September 2, 2024 visited the surgiccal department where his identity and authority was questioned by some top management on the basis that the MP did not give prior notice.
One, Dr Adu Aryee, a surgeon at the facility in a viral video questioned the MP.
“I don’t know you, Who are you? Do you have any letter introducing you? I have never met you in my life. told “I don’t know you. Do I know?”
Addressing the media afterwards, the Juaboso lawmaker expressed frustration at the direcliction of responsibility on the part of the hospital manangement and its impact on health delivery to patients.
“It came to the attention of the public that Korle Bu has suspended indefinitely elective surgeries and the reason they sighted was as a result of faulty lifts. This morning I decided to pay a surprise visit to see for myself.
“Unfortunately, the lifts are not working. We are here at the department of surgery and the lift at the department of surgery is not working. Information we have gathered is that some of the lifts have been down for the past four to five good years.”
“For me, it is rather unconscionable for a whole hospital, a teaching hospital such as Korle Bu, to derelict its duty for just maintaining a lift to facilitate the movement of patients to get the quality of healthcare they need.
“It is rather unfortunate and therefore I am calling on the government, the Minister responsible for health, they cannot suspend surgeries indefinitely. Within the next 24 hours, we must see the end of this unconscionable behaviour. We cannot accept that reason,” he stated.
Few hours after the MP’s visit, management of the hospital announced the successful repair of the elevator through a Facebook post claiming the elevator is now fully functional and operational.
