Minority Kicks Against Replacement Of Driver Licences By DVLA

The Minority Chief Whip in Ghana’s Parliament, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has served notice to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to halt the process of replacing driver licences issued in 2017 before it incurs the wrath of the caucus.

He said the move by the Authority is only “to take more money from all of us”.

He made this known on Tuesday, September 5 ahead of a nationwide rollout of new smart card licences to replace cards issued since 2017.

According to the Authority, in a notice to staff , all holders of Plyvinyl Chloride (PVC) cards issued from September, 2017 are to submit them for replacement.

The process begins Sunday, September 17, 2023.

“Holders of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) card (driver’s licence) are to present them to the nearest DVLA offices for verification and replacement for smart card driver’s licence,” the notice said.

“This exercise takes effect from now till March 31, 2024 when all PVC card (driver’s licence) shall be declared invalid by the Authority.”

It is required that an applicant undergoes and passes a mandatory eye test at any DVLA accredited test center and also present the old licence in person.

But the Adaklu Member of Parliament (MP) says he expected the Authority to “do proper public consultation and education before rolling out policies”.

“They must pause the process and do the right thing or face a major pushback,” he warned.
