45 Protesters arrested over “disruptive” demonstration against economic hardship and illegal mining
On Monday, September 23 2024, The Ghana police called the arrest of three protesters. In addition, 42 protesters were previously detained in the course of the economic hardship protest.
“The Ghana Police service has arrested Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the leaders of Democracy Hub, for the various unlawful acts he was involved in,” police spokesperson Grace Ansah-Akrofi said in a statement.
The rally started from last week Friday was set to continue until Monday. It took place in the capital, Accra.
The economic expectations of business operators in Ghana were not met by the government, as an economic crisis fed into the inflation of prices.
On this note, the Group Democratic Hub organized this protest to reclaim their economic rights and deplore the work of the leaders.
According to the police reports, the three individuals attacked the police officers who were performing their duties.
“These individuals assembled unlawfully and attacked police officers who were performing their lawful duties,” told Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs of Ghana Police Service.
“They will be arraigned in court for their actions, which include obstructing traffic, damaging property and causing disturbances.”
The police also added that some protesters engaged in various acts of lawlessness including removing the ignition key from a police vehicle and throwing it away, pushing down barriers and disrupting the peace.
“We are working to bring all those responsible to face justice,” Ansah-Akrofi added.
