$145m Borteyman Sports Complex hosts church service
After recently hosting the 2023 African Games, the $145m Borteyman Sports Complex has come under the spotlight after a video surfaced online of a church service being organised in one of the halls at the complex.
The hall served as the venue for multiple indoor sports disciplines during the near month-long games held in Accra three months ago after a year’s delay partly due to the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a viral video posted to the social media site, X (formerly Twitter), people could be seen conducting a church service inside one of the Domes of the multipurpose facility.
This has led many to fearing the worst considering the long list of plush sports facilities that have decayed over the years due to poor maintenance.
The complex which boasts multiple tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a handball court, is per the words of Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, set to be converted into a Sports University after the African Games.
The likes of the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi and Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale were built to host games at the 2008 AFCON but have deteriorated over the years with the Essipong Stadium practically unusable due to the terrible state of the facility.
Video of a terrible pitch at the Aliu Mahama Stadium surfaced online this weekend during the BAC Group All-Star Festival that had Black Stars players Andre Dede Ayew and Fatawu Issahaku feature in.
