The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has On Tuesday, July 4, 2023 officially sworn in the newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, James Gyakye Quayson.
Mr Bagbin administered two oaths, the oath Allegiance and oath as Member of Parliament to the newly elected MP and subsequently introduced him as the other Members present and the public for that matter.
Mr Quayson won the by-election organised by the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 with 17,245 votes representing 57.56 percent of the valid votes cast with the New Patriotic Party candidate, Charles Opoku coming second with 12,630 votes representing 42.15 percent.
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate Sefenu Bernice Enyonam got 87 votes representing 0.29 percent.
The by-election was occasioned following a supreme court ruling that declared the election of Mr Quayson during the 2020 general election as null and void since he did not had in his possession a certificate renouncing his Canadian citizenship at the time of filling his nomination form to contest as MP in October, 2020.
The Speaker commended him on his victory saying “On behalf of Parliament and behalf of other 274 MPs, I congratulate you on your victory”.
