Oklahoma Judge Discharged A Man After 48 years In Prison For A Crime He Didn’t Commit
Glynn Simmons, a man who is 70 years of age, got freed in July this year, after the judge on his case found out that a crucial evidence in his case was not handed over to its lawyer.
Mr Simmons was 22 years old when he was convicted and sentenced to death in 1957.
After claiming his innocence to the court judge, the sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment due to the rulings of the Supreme Court on the death penalty.
The co-defendant of Mr Simmons, Don Roberts was also sentenced to life, after a young teenager was asked to identify between some suspects in the police line-ups. She pointed out to several men, but later contradicted her own testimony according to the national registry of exonerations.
Don Roberts later got released on parole in 2008.
According to the Oaklahoma court jurisdiction, a compensation of $175,000 should be given to Mr Simmons, as he is currently battling liver cancer.
Thousands of dollars was raised by his GoFundMe, a fundraising platform, as a contribution to help support his living costs and chemotherapy.
