NDC Call On GJA Discusses Collaboration For Stronger Democracy

August 31, 2023

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is accusing the government of using state institutions as appendages of the ruling NPP.

The party cited the Bank of Ghana which it said borrowed and printed money unnecessarily to government, contributing to the country’s economic challenges.

The NDC also mentioned the Electoral Commission’s decision to restrict voter registration at the district level saying the plan is a ploy to disenfranchise citizens.

General Secretary of the NDC Fiifi Kwettey made these pronouncements when Executives of the NDC called on the Leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association at the Ghana International Press Center in Accra. Mr. Kwetey was accompanied by Kakra Essamuah and Obobuia Darko.
According to the NDC it is important for institutions of the state, such as the Electoral Commission, Central Bank and the media to remain independent, strong and vibrant.

However current happenings seem to suggest otherwise.

The Party’s General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey said institutions should be allowed to work and every effort must be made to resist attempts by the government to use state institutions for political gains.

The GJA President Albert Dwumfour in response to the NDC’s call for an independent media ahead of next year’s elections, said while the GJA will not countenance attacks on any journalist, any unprofessional journalist should be reported to the Association. Mr. Dwumfour was joined by GJA General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, Vice President, Linda Asante Adjei, Public Affairs Officer, Rebecca Ekpe and Organizing Secretary, Dominic Hlodzi.

Mr Dwumfour added that the GJA is working to produce a code of conduct for election coverage to ensure balanced, accurate and professional reporting in the 2024 elections.
