Mahama Tours Limited Voter Registration Centers In Accra

September 15, 2023

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is currently touring some centers for the ongoing limited voter registration exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC), Friday afternoon September, 15, 2023.

According to a release issued by the office of the former president on Friday, Mr Mahama will tour the centers which are all in the Greater Accra Region.

He will first visit the headquarters of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) before proceeding to Adenta, La and Tema district offices.

The limited voter registration exercise began on Tuesday, September 12 and scheduled to end on Monday, October 2, 2023.

The exercise was met with resistance by the NDC as well as four other political parties and civil society organizations who are opposed to the decision by the EC to have the registrations done only at its district offices instead of electoral areas across the country.

Opponents of the exercise being held at only the district office of the EC argues that, most citizens who live far from the offices would be denied access due to distance and other logistical constraints.

Mr Mahama in a broadcast added his voice for the EC to heed to the calls to have the registration moved closer to the voters in a decentralised manner.

He used the opportunity to urge all who qualified to take part fully in the exercise.

“I wish to add my voice to those who have called on the EC to reconsider its decision to restrict the registration exercise to its district offices only,” he said in a Facebook Live session on Wednesday, September 6.

“It is also our very strong recommendation that in line with regulation 22(b) of CI 91 as amended by CI 126, the Commission listens to the call for the extension of the exercise to take place in the electoral areas and not limited to the district offices of the Commission.

“This will curb many inconveniences including transportation, lack of money to move from distant locations and access.”

However, the EC went ahead with the exercise as planned in its district offices citing time factor as an excuse whiles assuring that another opportunity would be given to those who may not not be able to register.

The limited registration exercise is open to first-time voters who have turned 18 as well as as citizens who have not taken part in the last national registration exercise to have their nae unto the electoral register of the country.
