Mahama, NDC Leaders Stormed Parliament As Gyakye Quayson Takes Oath
It was an atmosphere of misfiling as former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama and leadership of the party stormed the chamber of Parliament ahead of the swearing-in ceremony for the re-elected Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.
The Minority Members were dressed in white apparel to signify their joy in celebrating the return of their colleague who won the recent by-election.
The attendance of the NDC flagbearer and its leadership underscored the importance and significance of the swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony officially affirmed the mandate of James Gyakye Quayson as the elected Member of Parliament for the people of Assin North.
Patrons of the party sung party songs including its signature tune : Revo! Revolution!!!…. as the official swearing-in ceremony concludes.
The Supreme Court nullified the 2020 election of Mr Gyakye Quayson as MP and ordered Parliament to delete his name from the records of house.
The Justices of the apex court ruled that he was not qualified to be elected MP and was stripped off the mandate since he was still a dual citizens of Ghana and Canada at the time of filing his nomination to be elected Member of Parliament in October of 2020.
Mr Quayson took delivery of his Canadian citizen renunciation certificate in November 2020 before the December 2020 elections that elected him MP but the court was resolute that events as at the time of filling is fundamental in the process of the election hence its decision.
Mr Gyakye Quayson who is now fully Ghanaian was eventually re-elected in the by-election for the Assin North constituency, garnering 57.56 percent of the total votes cast with 17,245 votes, defeating Charles Opoku of the NPP, who received 42.15 percent of the votes, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who garnered a mere 0.29 percent.
