Kufuor Scholars Inspire Tamale SHS Students to Aim For Higher Heights

August 9, 2023

Members of the University for Development Studies Chapter of the Kufuor Scholars Program (KSP) have urged students at the Tamale Senior High School to aim for higher heights.

The scholars held a speaking engagement for the students on personal branding, discovering one’s purpose, and how to access scholarships to pursue tertiary education.

Meda Ilupeju, president of the UDS chapter of the Kufuor Scholars Program expressed excitement about the students’ interests in developing themselves. “The students were highly engaged throughout the two hours spent with them and they asked very insightful questions. They were particularly interested in learning more about their current courses of study and the programs that were available to them in the universities, and we were happy to provide them with information and resources,” he said.

“Overall, the experience was incredibly rewarding. We connected with the sudents and we learned a lot from their questions and feedback. I feel grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such a meaningful event. I look forward to continuing to support and mentor young people in the future,” he added.

Gideon Takyi who is one of the scholars spoke to the students on scholarship opportunities available at the tertiary level, elaborating further on = application details, and how they could make themselves good fits for the scholarship schemes. “I was astonished by the kind of vision these brilliant young minds possess. I am really glad that I chose to be a part of this great experience… As our motto says, the sharpest minds need the finest advice,” he said.

Another scholar Francis Binchatikor Gmakpali said he was motivated by the in-depth nature of the questions the students asked. “It was lovely and inspiring talking to my junior brothers and sisters and having them asking me intelligent questions like what motivated me to offer veterinary nursing and how would one discover his purpose,” he said.

Scholar Hagar Abelumbolga said the level of excitement among the students exceeded their expectations and they look forward to doing more. “I would really love to indulge in such activities more often to share some of the amazing training l receive from the Kufuor Scholars Program,” he said.

About Kufuor Scholars Program
The Kufuor Scholars Program (KSP) is an initiative of the John A. Kufuor Foundation, an organization founded by former President John Agyekum Kufuor after he stepped down from office. The former president launched the Kufuor Scholars Program in 2014 to offer mentoring and coaching opportunities for tertiary students.

The initiative has the overarching objective of mentoring a critical mass of future change agents who are imbued with a strong sense of patriotism. It seeks to imbibe the former president’s effective leadership skills in these tertiary-level students so they can help develop the nation. The program organises boot camps, mentoring sessions, workshops, and related activities that aim at transforming the lives of these young people.

More than 150 young people have benefitted so far. The KSP recruits 25 to 30 students every year through a competitive application process to participate in a three-year long training and mentorship program. We are blessed to be part of the 7th batch of the Kufuor Scholars Program.
