Kotoko Beat Hearts To Lift Maiden Democracy Cup

Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have emerged as winners of the maiden Democracy Cup after beating Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko’s win marks the third victory in a row for the Porcupine Warriors over their biggest rival Accra Hearts of Oak. Kotoko beat Hearts 3-2 and 2-0 in the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season.

The game served as the main attraction of the event fronted by Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to mark the 30^th anniversary of democratic governance in Ghana.

A curtain raiser involving some parliamentarians and former Black Stars was played and had the select Ghana Parliament side win 3-1. 

A converted penalty kick by Justice Blay and a shot by Peter Amidu that should have been saved by goalkeeper Kwesi Nketiah in the 62^nd minute gave Kotoko the win. Amidu proceeded to celebrate in Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham’s trademark style.

Hearts of Oak got what turned out to be a consolation goal in the 50^th minute through Asamoah Boateng.
