Korle-Bu Renal Unit To Be Re-opened Today
The renal unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital which has been closed-down over the past five months is expected to be re-opened to patients from today, November 6, 2023.
This decision according to sources at the health ministry was reached after at a meeting by officials last Friday, November 3, 2023.
The officials unanimously agreed that the facility should begin accepting outpatients today after months of closure.
The unit had been closed to outpatients since May 22, 2023, which forced patients to seek dialysis services elsewhere, primarily in private hospitals or facilities.
A partial reopening of the unit occurred on September 27, with an announcement of an increase in dialysis treatment per session from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42.
However, this increase was reversed after a public uproar, and the unit remained closed to outpatients.
The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, had directed the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to immediately reopen the unit.
Meanwhile, Parliament has summoned the sector minister this week to apprise the lawmakers about circumstances leading to the closure of the facility and measures put in place for its reopening.
