IGP Removal Viral Leaked Tape ‘Seems Doctored’ – Atta Akyea
There is another twist to the ongoing probe by the Parliamentary Ad-hoc Committee into the viral leaked audio in which some senior police officers together with Bugri Naabu were heard allegedly plotting the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.
Chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta Akyea has disclosed that the tape appears to be doctored.
Mr Atta Akyea,Atta Akyea who is the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South made the claim on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, while addressing the media after the committee help in-camera hearing with the witnesses and their lawyers in parliament house.
According to him, the tape which has been circulating on social media, is a shorter version than the new tape delivered to the committee by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu.
“It seems to be the case, because the second tape is a long conversation,” Atta Akyea said.
The viral leaked tape on IGP Dampare has been the subject of much discussion and debate. Bugri Naabu had earlier confirmed to the committee that the tape was authentic.
The leaked tape contains a conversation between Bugri Naabu and three senior Police Officers – COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi – plotting the removal of the IGP to help the NPP rig the 2024 elections.
The officers especially COP Mensah and Supt Asare confirmed to the committee they were the people captured in the audio but were quick to add that the tape were dotted when they appeared before the committee. They even accused the IGP of not managing the police service well and masterminded the recording of the viral audio.
However, when he took his turn before the committee on Tuesday September 12, 2023 to respond to the allegations, the Inspector General of Police Dr George Dampare dismissed allegations made against him by the Police Officers stating that those wild allegations caused his family severe pain.
The IGP also refuted the allegations that he was part of a conspiracy to secretly record conversations of the three implicated police officers.
The IGP also dismissed suggestions that he was in constant touch with the flagbearer of the opposition party, John Dramani Mahama. He revealed that the allegations made by the Police officers caused his family severe pain.
He described the allegations of the officers as being on fishing expedition acting as octopus.
The National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah and the lawyer for the Inspector General of Police, Kwame Gyan on Wednesday met with Parliament’s ad-hoc committee probing the leaked tape for an in-camera hearing.
The in-camera hearing also had in attendance the three senior police officers implicated in the secret recording together with their lawyers.
They were expected to cross-examine themselves.
