Gov’t To Construct More Warehouses Ahead Of Bumper Food Harvest-NAFCO
Government through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is partnering with the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCo)to construct more warehouses across the country in anticipation of storing more grains to avert a shortage of food, especially in senior high schools.
Th Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO, Hanan Abdul-Wahab who disclosed this in Accra during the Meet the Press Series hosted by the Ministry of Information emphasised the urgent need for more warehouses to be constructed due the potential bumper grain harvest expected under the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
“We have not just warehouses, but silos for long-term storage. There is currently an ongoing visit to all the abandoned silos, because, with the Food and Jobs (PFJ) phase two, we are going to have a lot of grains to store for Ghana” Mr Abdul-Wahab stated.
The National Food Suppliers Association has in recent past held a number of protests including picketing at the premises of NAFCO due to over GH¢200 million arrears owed members of the association for food supplied to various senior high schools across the country by the later.
Government has however cleared about 85% of the arrears with some 15% outstanding.
