Electrochem Salt Mine Will Significantly Impact Ghana’s Economy- Akufo-Addo
Full operation of Electrochem Ghana limited, Africa’s largest salt mine and processing plant located at Ada Songor in the Greater Accra region will significantly transform the fortunes of the Ghanaian economy, President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated.
Speaking at Ghana’s 66th Independence Day celebration at Koridua in the Eastern region, Mr Akufo-addo revealed that the indigenous salt mining company has started operations after the initial disputes that affected its operations.

The president paid glowing tribute to the Group Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr Daniel McDan for his dynamism in ensuring that Ghana is on course to commence large-scale production of salt through Electrochem to help bring drastic change to the local economy.
“The other major project that is coming on stream, which is bound to make a dramatic change to the economy, is the Ada Songhor Salt project, being spearheaded by Electrochem Salt Mine Ltd, led by the dynamic Ghanaian entrepreneur, Mr. Daniel McKorley, aka McDan. After many years of disputes, which prevented the exploitation of salt at the site, work has finally started and salt will be mined on a large commercial scale,” president Akufo-Addo stated.

According to him, Electrochem Salt Mine will become Africa’s largest salt production facility, with a projected production capacity of two million metric tonnes by 2027.
“With its initial ability to produce some six hundred and fifty thousand metric tons (650,000 MT) of salt per annum, and expanding its productive capacity to one million metric tonnes this year, and to two million metric tonnes by 2027, at ninety-nine-point-nine-nine-percent (99.99%) purity, the Electrochem Salt Mine will be the biggest salt producing facility in Africa. These are figures that should spell a significant change in the economy, and cheer us up,” he stated.
president Akufo-Addo commissioned the Electrochem Ghana limited Salt Mine and Processing Plant in August 2023 for commercial production of salt in commercial quantities for the local and international market.
Electrochem Ghana limited currently eploys some 3,000 young people and its expected to double that figure when operations reach full capacity soon.
