Algerian Coach Announces Resignation After Defeat To Mauritania
Algerian National team manager, Djamel Belmadi has announced his resignation to members of the blaying body after the final group D game against Mauritania at the 2023 AFCON tournament in Cote D’voire.
Algeria lost the match against Mauritania 0 1 on Tuesday January 23, 2024.
The defeat sparked angry reactions from Algerian fans at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium.
Some fans who could not take the loss decided to follow the team to their lodging place that same night, resulting in a confrontation between the fans and the team staff.
Coach Djamel Belmadi is expected to hold a press conference to offically announce his departure from the Algerian job.
Since the Fennec Foxes of Algeria won the Nations Cup title in 2019, they have failed to make it past the group stages, finishing last in back-to-back AFCON tournaments.
Algeria finished botom of group D with just two points from three matches below Mauritania with three points, Burkina Faso with four and Angola as group leaders with seven points.
The Algerian manager’s resignation follows a series of departures by other national team managers who have deserted their posts volutarilly or being sacked due to their poor performance at the continental tournament.
They include Tom Saintfiet, head coach of the Scorpions of Gambia, the Zambian National team Coach, Avram Grant who resigned and the Ghanaian coach, Chris Hughton of the Black Stars of Ghana who was sacked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
