Afenyo-Markin Commits Ghc 1,000,000 To The Fight Against Hepatitis B
Deputy Majority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has committed One Million Ghana Cedis (GHC 1,000,000) to help fight the menace of hepatitis B in Effutu and its surrounding communities.
Hepatitis B, a silent epidemic affecting communities in Ghana and worldwide, with significant presence within the Effutu Municipality.
Mr Afenyo Markin who is the Member of Parliament for Effutu said he was concerned about the alarming rate at which residents in the area are testing positive for the virus hence the gesture to help accelerate screening and vaccination against the disease.
The MP who announced during a town Hthe gesture 2106 individuals were screened for the virus, of which 405 tested positive. This includes 68 pregnant women, 148 children, and 189 youth.
He encouraged all residents to avail themselves for the screening and vaccination exercise to ensure a hepatitis B free Effutu.
Mumbies Foundation, a health non-governmental organisation would utilise the the Ghc1,000,000.00 gesture from the MP through screening and vaccination to help deal with the menace of hepatitis B.
A subsequent press release issued by Mumbies Foundaton and signed by its Project Manager, Israel Adorbley said its HepaGuard Project initiative which championing the fight against hepatitis B said the project is aimed at protecting liver health, raising awareness, and making a lasting impact on the Effutu Municipality and beyond.
The project seeks to provide free Hepatitis B screenings and vaccinations to all individuals within the Effutu Municipality and beyond and also support Hepatitis B pregnant women with free Immunoglobulin to prevent mother-to-child. By Early detection and prevention are at the core of our mission.
According to the release, the initiative is solely financed by the Deputy Majority Leader as his contribution to the well-being of all Ghanaians, especially those within Effutu and its environs.
The HepaGuard Project is set to change that. It is more than a campaign; it is a movement toward better health and brighter futures, driven by the vision and support of Hon Alex Afenyo Markin.
However, the MP has been instrumental and a great financial pivot to the Mumbies Foundation and has collaborated on many occasions to spread the education and screening of hepatitis B within the municipality since its formation.
The lawmaker is also an ardent advocate for the inclusion of hepatitis B in the National Health Insurance Scheme to afford opportunity to the less privileged in society.
In a related development, Mr Afenyo-Markin has held different stakeholders engagement meetings with his constituents where highlighted the need for his gesture that would ensure that all residents of the area especially young people are screened and vaccinated against the disease.
Hon. Afenyo Markin also informed them about Effutu hosting this year’s ECOWAS Parliament again in the coming days and called for collaborative support to make it a success even more than the previous one.;;;
Afenyo Markin made this known during a town hall engagement and urged constituents to make themselves available for screening and vaccination.
“We have got some alarming figures in the area of health. This is because a healthy body brings a healthy nation. 2106 of people were screened and 405 tested positive for the virus. This includes 68 pregnant women, 148 children, and 189 youth.
“Hepatitis B destroys our liver and may not show signs until it reaches the chronic stage. A lot of our people are dying slowly from this disease. But as a Member of Parliament, I can’t sit and watch this destroy my constituency. I have committed an amount of one million cedis to help screening and vaccination of people within the constituency. I encourage all to take part in the exercise.”
HBV is a serious disease that can lead to liver cancer and death. Early screening and vaccination are essential to preventing the spread of the virus and its complications.
