Majority MPs Pledge GH¢30,000 Support For Ada Flood Victims

November 7, 2023

The 137 members of Parliament in the majority caucus have pledged to dole out GH¢30,000 to support flood victims in Ada following the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The pledge followed a disturbing picture painted by the Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, about how pupils of schools affected by the spillage were relying on the polluted water for survival.

Her fear was that, there could an acute diarrhoea infection or cholera if care was not taken. Speaking passionately about the challange,

Ms Cudjoe, who also doubles as the Second Deputy minority Chief Whip, said provision of safe water and sanitation were critical to prevent and control the transmission of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, made the pledge on behalf of his colleagues after contributions from members from both sides of the divide.

He, personally, pledged unspecified bags of rice to be distributed to the affected people in Ada.

In addition, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, urged both the Majority and minority caucuses to donated 100,000 bags each of potable water to the affected to avoid an outbreak.

The construction of the first-ever examination printing Centre has commenced at the mining town of Obuasi in the Ashanti region to scale up the pass rate of basic school examinations from 94 per cent to 100 per cent by next academic year.

It is the second to be constructed in the area. The first was in East constructed early this year.

The project is to take off the burden from the Obuasi Municipal Assembly from spending money to print and conduct yearly mock exams for final year students at all levels.

The examination printing centre is one of two projects being undertaken by mining firm, AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), Obuasi Mine.

The second, is a CHPS compound to help improve health care delivery in the area while preventing residents from trekking long distances to access healthcare.

The projects are estimated to cost GH¢ 2.4 million and GH¢ 3.5 million respectively.

The initiatives are aimed at improving quality education and to provide medical services that include pre and post-natal care, child welfare services and general outpatient care.

The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Elijah Adansi-Bonah, described the projects as a welcome relief for the assembly, stressing that the assembly has over the years sunk much funds into the printing and conducting of mock exams for students on gratis.
