Prz Akufo-Addo Urges Developing Countries To Develop Own Technology As He Address G77+China Summit

September 18, 2023

Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has challenged his colleague members from developing nations South of the globe to development their own technological tools through innovation to help advance the development of their respective countries.

He emphasised that the lack of equitable access to technology should drive the bloc to seek its own means and develop new methods.

In Ghana, he indicated that, changes and transformations are being made in educational and research centers to advance the development of science and technology.

According to him, all the stages of development, and the evolution of mankind’s civilization, have been linked to innovation, have been driven by science, and have been sustained by technology. New inventions and innovations, as well as creative tools and processes, are the measures of human progress

He made the call when addressed the G 77 + China Summit, a gathering of Heads of State and Governments in Havana, Cuba.

The G77+ summit was held on the theme “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology And Innovation”.

President Akufo-Addo whiles acknowledging the critical role technology play in development also admit the negative consequences that it brings saying; “innovations can result in very risky adventures such as devastating wars, climate change and environmental degradation”.

He noted that most of the countries of the global South, which are mostly members of the G77+China, unfortunately, lack the tools and capacity to create new knowledge, whilst the endowed countries of the North do not lend themselves to transferring technology and innovation willingly, nor keen to finance the building of science infrastructure for developing countries, thereby denying the latter of the benefits of science, technology and innovation.

Mr Akufo-Addo urged for the need not to allow the reality of lagging behind and the lack of support to defeat them (Ghana inclusive) but rather find their own means to develop their our own technology since others have done so.
