Ablakwa, Others ‘commissions’ ‘National Cathedral’ On ‘Behalf Of Govt’ Despite Security Threats

‘Investigative’ Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa acompanied by his colleague lawmakers from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in a satirical move commisioned the uncompleted National Cathedral project on March 6, 2024 a day promised by President Akufo-Addo to do so.

The homourous act by the opposition lawmakers which was performed in the midst of security forces preventing them from accessing the project site was geared towards criticising government’s failure to complete the project as planned.

Mr Samuel Ablakwa had announced on social media handles of his intention to hold media engagement on the cathedral project site on March 6, the day for its original commissioning.

Security personnel comprising the police and military officers stationed at the Cathedral construction site initially prevented the MPs and media men from accessing the entrance of the facilty. They however allowed access halfway where Mr Ablakwa sandwich by his colleagues addressed the media with their back facing the project site.

They then cut a sod to commission the Cathedral on behalf of the president.

“We commission this expensive hole, on behalf of Dr Bawumia, President Akufo-Addo and Ken Ofori-Atta” Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam Nartey George said as they cut the sod.

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in the 2021 budget statement to Parliament stated that the cathedral which was originally schedulled to be commissioned on Macrch 6, 2024 has become a focal point of criticism, particularly from minority MPs who are dissatisfied with the project’s expenditure.

Mr Ablakwa was accompanied by Member for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Member for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Member for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson and Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George.

National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi was also in attendace.
