Black Queens To Extend Winning Streak Against She-Amavubis

September 25, 2023

Ghana’s Black Queens will aim to continue their scoring spree as they host the She-Amavubis of Rwanda in the second leg of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium tomorrow, with a healthy 7-0 lead from the first leg encounter at the Kigali Pele Stadium last Wednesday.

Goals by Doris Boaduwaa, Evelyn Badu, Princella Adubea, Alice Kusi and Anasthesia Achiaa gave the team one of their biggest winning margins, reducing the return fixture to a mere formality.

Adding to the woes of a side that theoretically are out of contention, is the suspension of Rwanda’s head coach, Grace Nyinawumuntu, by the country’s football governing body over unsavoury and sexist remarks about the Ghanaian players following his team’s heavy loss.

Unlike boxing where one side can throw in the towel to prevent further humiliation, the Rwandans will still line up against an improving Black Queens side who are odds-on favourite to win by a wide margin to solidify their path to the next round.

Dominant Queens
Under the guidance of Coach Nora Hauptle, the Black Queens have dominated every opponent with impressive results, with tomorrow’s game an opportunity to hit a cricket score line.

Since the Swiss gaffer took charge in January, the team have recorded six successive wins, garnered 21 goals and maintained clean sheets in all the matches. They defeated Benin (3-0), recorded back-to-back victories against Senegal (3-0, 1-0) and thrashed Guinea (3-0, 4-0) before routing Rwanda 7-0 last Wednesday.

Tomorrow, the Ghanaians are unlikely to take their foot off the accelerator, with many of the players who have been at the forefront of the improving form, including Badu, Boaduwaa, Portia Boakye, Azumah Bugre, Alice Kusi, Nyamekye Stella, Salifu Safiatu, and Tweneboaa Justice, all available for selection.

With qualification to the next round virtually assured, Coach Hauptle could shuffle her cards to give other players such as Ernestina Abambila, Achiaa, Vivian Adjei Konadu, Grace Acheampong, Adubea, Mary Amponsah, starting role in tomorrow’s encounter.
